Normally work in adapters that have a good voltage regulation. Cheap adapters have moved high voltage at low load and normal voltage at rated load. A fool may 300mA adapter full load to 4.5V, but 5V or greater when the load is only 150mA or less. A cheap adapter with lamps, could fry the laser pointer.
